One of the first questions I get asked when I tell people I’m
a freelance writer is where I get my work from. I’d have to say nearly all of
it comes from the web. You will come up with some jobs networking (more about
that later), but the vast amount of your business when you are starting out
comes from online.
You can sit and Google “freelance writing” and come up with thousands
of opportunities, but by the time you are done clicking on the links, reading
the information and then trying to make sure they are legitimate, you’ve wasted
what could be a lot of precious working hours.
Many sites out there offer to send you job listings so you don’t
have to continually visit websites. The first rule is that, if they ask for
money, forget it. You’ll find more than enough free listings out there. Save
your money.
When I first started writing online I signed up for nearly
every newsletter I came across that might offer me potential work. Then I
started weeding through to find the ones with worthwhile jobs. It wasn’t easy
and I have to admit I probably spent more than half my time those first few
weeks reading through newsletters. In the end it was worth it as I built a
steady repertoire of work.
I’m going to make it a little easier for you. Here are my
favorite newsletters when it comes to finding work as a freelance writer. I
strongly recommend you sign up for these and start skimming through them for
work. I’ve gotten some wonderful lasting gigs from these places.
